Making Her Dreams Come True . . .

How often is it that a guy can help his wife realize one of her childhood dreams. Yesterday was that day. We left Maumee, Ohio going south in the pouring rain for Greenville, Ohio: the home of Kathleen's girlhood hero Annie Oakley--an historical figure that many think of as a myth or legend--but, no a real woman who was born and died in Greenville, Ohio at the age of 66. But she traveled the world becoming one the the first female Super Stars, plying her trade: sharpshooter.

At the age of eight Annie took up shooting as a way to make money for her family by shooting and selling small game. She became good--very good with her gun. She also seemed to be quite a lady. Caring and giving to others. She mariied her husband when she was sixteen after beating him in a rifle competition: he shot 24/25 clay pigeons--she got 25/25. They were married for 50 years--she died at 66, he died 16 days later. They say of a broken heart.

But my Kathleen was so enamored of Annie that when her mom was trying to find preschools for her she would tell them, "her name is Kathleen, but she likes to be called Annie Oakley". So, needless to say this was a big day for Kathleen, coming face to face with her heroine.

So we visited Annie at the Garst Museum--her official museum & we visited the cemetery where she & her husband are buried. Kathleen even left a little memento on her tombstone--a little necklace she's had since she was very young.

It was fun to see my Sweetie get to fulfill this yearning. We also visited several old cemeteries and an old flour mill today, but the highlight was our time with Annie.
